HERITAGE / THE ORIGINAL CAPE SMOKEY LODGE
THE STORY BEHIND CORMORANT ROCK
Cormorant Rock was created with a deep respect for the history of Cape Smokey and the landscape that surrounds it. The inspiration goes back to the original Cape Smokey lodge, once one of the most recognizable buildings on the mountain. For generations, it was more than a ski lodge. It was a gathering place and an important part of the Cape Smokey experience.
Sadly, the lodge was lost to fire, but its character and its place in the mountain’s story were something we felt deserved to be remembered. When the first ideas for Cormorant Rock began to take shape, the vision was never to recreate the old lodge. Instead, the architect looked to its distinctive form, character and connection to the landscape as inspiration, creating a contemporary interpretation and a subtle homage to what once stood on the mountain.
That same philosophy guided the materials and details throughout Cormorant Rock. Natural tones, warm wood and carefully considered finishes were chosen to reflect the landscape around us—the forests, rocky coastline, mountains and changing colours of Cape Breton. Rather than competing with its surroundings, the architecture was designed to feel connected to them. For Martin Kejval, this was particularly important. From the beginning, his vision for Cape Smokey has been about more than developing individual buildings or attractions. It has been about understanding what makes this place extraordinary, respecting its history and creating something that can become part of its next chapter. Set directly on the Atlantic, with the mountains rising behind them, the waterfront chalets at Cormorant Rock bring that idea to life. Contemporary, comfortable and thoughtfully designed, they create a place where the architecture, the ocean and the surrounding landscape become part of the experience.
Cormorant Rock is a connection between what was here before and what is still to come—a new chapter inspired by the history, character and natural beauty of Cape Smokey.
